About Kelly Shaurette

Sharing my love of Florida through art

Growing up roaming mangrove forests and exploring our Florida waters, my artwork weaves together botanicals, coral, shells, and sealife.

I begin each painting with no preconceived notion, allowing the painting to speak for itself. I intuitively build abstract layers of acrylic paint and ink, allowing the water in the paint to flow and move through my paintbrush, fingers, and other mark making tools. I work in the negative space, pushing the subject closer to the viewer using bright, vivid colors. I sense movement and unity in how the paint moves around the substrate and create an abstract composition.

Later I discover shapes in the canvas that inspire me to fill the negative space and develop detail in the painting subject to tell the story of a connected tropical life. I enjoy playing with color and texture inspired by nature and how I feel connected to the environment.

The branches of the trees, coral, and botanicals represent a form of connectiveness and unity.
